Perplexity’s AI Answering Engine Officially Absent from Snapchat Launch
Perplexity Integration with Snapchat Comes to an Abrupt Halt
In an unexpected turn of events, Snapchat has decided to discontinue its Perplexity integration, a feature eagerly anticipated by many users. This revelation emerged from Snap’s Q1 2026 investor letter, which confirmed that both companies mutually decided to end their partnership. Initially, this collaboration represented a substantial $400 million cash-and-equity deal announced just last November.
The envisioned integration aimed to enrich Snapchat’s Chat interface by allowing users to pose queries and receive conversational, source-backed answers seamlessly within the app. Originally, Snap had projected that revenue from this partnership would begin surfacing in 2026. However, recent sales forecasts now operate under the assumption that there will be no contribution from Perplexity at all.

The Landscape of AI Integration in Messaging Apps
This cancellation occurs amidst a broader trend where technology firms are increasingly embedding AI assistants throughout their applications. Companies like Meta are incorporating Meta AI across popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Simultaneously, Google is enhancing its products—including Search and Gmail—with its recent development, Gemini.
Snapchat appeared to be on a similar trajectory with its Perplexity initiative. Given the app’s vast user base, which boasts hundreds of millions of daily interactions, the idea of integrating a chatbot seemed promising. Yet, problems began to surface as early as February, when Snap revealed they had yet to finalize a comprehensive rollout plan with Perplexity. Concerns were also raised regarding how AI searches would function in private messaging, particularly concerning younger audiences and sensitive discussions.
Is Snapchat Still Engaged with AI Technologies?

The termination of the Perplexity deal doesn’t signify that Snapchat is abandoning artificial intelligence altogether. Recently, the platform launched AI Sponsored Snaps, an innovative ad format allowing brands to embed interactive AI chatbots directly within chats. Thus, while users may not benefit from Perplexity’s search capabilities, they can still engage with chatbot-style interactions through advertisements.
Moreover, Snapchat is ramping up activities surrounding Snap Map, introducing a Place Loyalty feature that ranks users based on their visitation frequency to various locations over the past year. This feature includes Gold, Silver, and Bronze status levels, with user rankings kept private and location sharing off by default.
As Snap continues to evolve, its user base is also expanding. In the first quarter of the year, global daily active users climbed 5% year-over-year to reach 483 million, while monthly active users increased by 5% to 965 million. Snap attributes this growth to enhancements in Snap Map, Lenses, and other exciting features within the app.
The world of AI within social media continues to evolve swiftly, reflecting the ongoing pursuit of innovative ways to engage users. Though the Perplexity partnership may have been shelved, it certainly raises questions about the future of AI in messaging applications.
