Unlock More In-Person Dates with Voice AI: Discover How Technology Enhances Your Dating Experience
Celeste Amadon and Asher Allen stumbled upon a visionary concept while developing an app aimed at utilizing AI to book restaurant dates. This moment of inspiration has blossomed into a compelling initiative designed to cultivate real-world connections among users. Now generating interest from investors, it’s clear that their journey is just beginning.
The Birth of Known: A Unique Approach to Dating
Recognizing the limitations of traditional onboarding, Amadon and Allen introduced a voice-powered AI system that engages users in conversation rather than relying on tedious forms. What emerged was surprisingly effective—people enjoyed sharing their stories. As a result, the onboarding process averages an impressive 26 minutes, giving rise to their San Francisco-based startup, Known.
“This is groundbreaking,” Amadon explains. “For the first time, we can gather sufficient insights about individuals to suggest compatible dates. By minimizing rejection and enhancing the user experience, we aim to help people go on more dates.”
Emphasizing In-Person Connections
Initial findings from Known’s testing phase in San Francisco indicated that a remarkable 80% of introductions resulted in actual dates—far surpassing typical swipe-based dating platforms. This impressive statistic encouraged the startup to secure $9.7 million from well-known investors such as Forerunner and NFX.
Eurie Kim of Forerunner elaborates on Amadon’s vision, noting, “Celeste is incredibly insightful, particularly regarding the younger female demographic. Many of these women harbor unexpressed desires and needs—nuances that are often lost in conventional profiles but uncovered in conversation.”
Addressing Generation-Wide Challenges
Amadon, who left Stanford to pursue this venture, is passionate about tackling social issues at scale. “The loneliness epidemic in the U.S. is, without a doubt, one of our generation’s gravest challenges,” she asserts.
Revolutionary Onboarding Process
The AI-powered onboarding method sets Known apart. Instead of filling out forms, users answer questions interactively, creating a more engaging experience. With one user clocking in at an astonishing hour and 38 minutes for onboarding, the process is anything but standard.
By allowing dynamic follow-up questions, the AI can adapt based on user responses. For example, if someone mentions they’ve recently moved to the city, the system can delve deeper into their feelings and experiences.
Streamlined Matchmaking Mechanics
Once onboarding is complete, the AI generates potential matches tailored to users’ preferences. If someone is interested in a profile, they simply tap “interested.” Upon mutual selection, both users have 24 hours to agree to meet. This structured approach minimizes drawn-out chats and encourages genuine connections.
After the date, feedback can be provided to further enhance future recommendations. Moreover, the app retains its roots in dining by suggesting restaurants based on individual likes and dislikes, with integrated AI chat ensuring users can indicate their availability.
Building Towards the Future
Currently, Known employs three full-time engineers alongside a team focused on market strategy—plans are in motion to expand this as funding rolls in. With exciting beta tests underway in San Francisco, the startup is gearing up for a broader launch next year.
In a landscape buzzed with new entrants, Amadon acknowledges the competitive spirit. “Seeing others innovate in the dating space validates the need for a shift from swipe-based models. We’re proud of the unique direction Known is headed in,” she shares.
