“Students spend at least 13 years with us, and as they head into the world, we want them to feel ready and prepared,” she explains.

Holloway’s journey with the AI education initiative began in 2019. That year, GCPS was eager to enhance its Career Technical Education (CTE) offerings by integrating artificial intelligence into their curriculum.
“Together with my team, we launched the ‘Computer Science for All’ initiative and an AI pilot program,” she recounts. “The momentum has been incredible.”
How It Works: Embedding AI Across the Curriculum
The AI program isn’t limited to a single elective course; instead, it’s integrated into the fabric of the educational experience, ensuring all grades benefit.
“We’ve developed an AI framework with support from various postsecondary and industry partners to address the skills students will need,” Holloway explains.
Through collaboration with teachers, students can draw connections from their regular coursework to real-world AI applications, encompassing both technical skills, like programming, and vital soft skills, such as creative problem-solving and collaborative leadership.
A Unique Learning Approach: Swim, Snorkel, or Scuba
To simplify the concept of varying engagement levels with AI, Holloway introduces the analogy of swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
- Swimmers: All students will understand the basics of AI.
- Snorkelers: Most will use AI proficiently.
- Scuba Divers: A select group will become developers, seeking in-depth mastery through a specialized AI career pathway.
Staffing the Future
Creating a strong educational framework requires passionate educators. Holloway emphasizes the need for a flexible approach to hiring:
"We’re looking for individuals willing to learn alongside students. This has been a grassroots effort, and we’ve invested heavily in training quality teachers," she affirms.
As the program evolves, it will include both industry professionals transitioning to teaching roles and educators who are familiar with computer science.
