Revolutionizing E-Commerce in India: Unleashing the Power of AI Chatbots with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
India is embracing a revolutionary shift in shopping with the introduction of AI chatbots, and leading this exciting journey is OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Imagine a seamless, intuitive way to shop and pay—right at your fingertips. With an increasingly digital-savvy population, India is not just stepping into the future; it’s setting the stage for global AI companies to innovate and engage meaningfully.
The Launch of AI-Driven Shopping in India
Recently, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) partnered with OpenAI and Razorpay to initiate an innovative pilot program. This initiative allows consumers to shop and pay directly using ChatGPT, creating a streamlined and user-friendly experience. Razorpay has announced that this pilot will expand across the country in the upcoming months, revolutionizing how transactions are conducted.
How It Works
The framework for this groundbreaking shopping experience is built on two new systems:
- UPI Reserve Pay: This lets users block specific amounts of funds for future purchases with designated merchants.
- UPI Circle: This feature allows UPI authentication while enabling payments directly within ChatGPT, eliminating the need to switch to external apps.
Razorpay has tailored a merchant integration layer, enabling businesses to facilitate transactions via AI chatbots.
Initial Collaborations
Among the first to join this pilot are:
- BigBasket: India’s popular online grocery store.
- Vi: Leading mobile telecom operator.
These businesses allow customers to shop for groceries or mobile recharge plans through ChatGPT seamlessly. Additionally, Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank provide the essential banking infrastructure for the new system.

The Broader Implication
As the world’s most populous nation, India boasts over a billion internet users, making it a key market for OpenAI. Recognizing this potential, OpenAI has launched a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan to attract more subscribers. This new commerce pilot is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to engage more deeply with India’s burgeoning digital marketplace.
“It’s not just a payment solution,” emphasizes Harshil Mathur, co-founder and CEO of Razorpay. “It’s a transformative approach to discovery and commerce.”
The Impact of UPI
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has already cemented its position as India’s dominant digital payment method, with over 20 billion transactions monthly. By integrating AI, the NPCI aims to further embed UPI into daily commerce. As consumers grow comfortable with chatbots, the potential for widespread adoption increases significantly.
Future Collaborations
Mathur also revealed that Razorpay has completed a proof-of-concept for additional integration with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. With promises of a wider rollout in the coming weeks, this technology stands poised to reshape consumer interaction in retail.
Both Google and Anthropic recognize the growth potential in India, working diligently to localize their offerings for Indian users. While discussions about revenue-sharing models for partner companies are still in their infancy, the prospect of user retention through enhanced engagement is palpable.
Consumer Privacy and Security
In this new setup, user data protection is paramount. AI companies will not access transaction data, ensuring that payment amounts are pre-authorized through robust security measures like two-factor authentication.
Last month, OpenAI introduced a “Instant Checkout” experience along with its Agentic Commerce Protocol, designed in collaboration with Stripe. These developments allow businesses to connect with consumers through AI agents effectively. Similarly, Google has launched its Agent Payments Protocol to facilitate similar transactions.
“This is a forward-looking concept with tremendous potential,” shares Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree Payments. “Its growth will align closely with the adoption rates of shopping agents.”

The Road Ahead
In addition to Razorpay, Cashfree Payments is rolling out its own Agentic Payments MCP, allowing merchants to enable direct transactions via shopping agents. Although Cashfree’s solution demands that merchants develop their own shopping agents for integration, it supports all major payment methods.
As this thrilling landscape continues to evolve, the shopping experience in India is on the verge of transformation. More merchants are expected to join this innovative venture, expanding options for consumers across various sectors, including e-commerce and lending.
As you look toward the future of shopping, remember the role you play in embracing innovation. The dawn of AI-driven commerce is here—are you ready to explore its possibilities? Dive into this future where technology and convenience meet, and let it empower your shopping journey.
