Semiconductor design company Arm is embarking on a transformative collaboration with Meta aimed at enhancing the social media powerhouse’s AI capabilities. As Meta navigates a significant infrastructure expansion, this partnership will see its ranking and recommendation systems migrate to Arm’s Neoverse platform. This cutting-edge platform has recently been optimized to power AI systems in the cloud, among other applications.

"AI is transforming how people connect and create," said Santosh Janardhan, Meta’s infrastructure chief. He emphasized the partnership’s potential, stating, "Working with Arm allows us to efficiently scale that innovation to over 3 billion users of Meta’s applications and technologies."

Arm’s Evolving Role in AI

While Arm is renowned for its mobile CPU architecture, its GPU offerings have historically been overshadowed by competitors like Nvidia. However, Arm is now shifting focus to its strengths in low-power deployments, marking an exciting new chapter in its journey.

"AI’s next era will be defined by delivering efficiency at scale," noted Rene Haas, CEO of Arm. He sees this partnership as a bridge between Arm’s prowess in performance-per-watt and Meta’s groundbreaking AI innovations.

Infrastructure Expansion at Meta

A notable project in this venture, codenamed “Prometheus,” aims to operate with several gigawatts of power by 2027. Ongoing construction in New Albany, Ohio, and a 200-megawatt natural gas project are set to support this initiative.

In addition, Meta is developing a massive data center campus, known as “Hyperion,” across 2,250 acres in northwest Louisiana. Once completed, this facility is expected to deliver an impressive 5 gigawatts of computational power. Although construction is set to continue through 2030, some sections may begin operations sooner.

One essential aspect of the Arm-Meta collaboration is that neither company will exchange ownership stakes or significant physical infrastructure. This differentiates their partnership from others in the AI infrastructure arena. For instance, Nvidia has actively invested in various AI ventures, recently committing a staggering $100 billion to OpenAI, as well as significant funds toward projects involving Elon Musk’s xAI and other pioneering labs.

In a competitive landscape, AMD is also stepping up to the plate, pledging to supply OpenAI with a remarkable 6 gigawatts of compute capacity. This deal includes stock options worth up to 10% of the company.
